Hyperbolic relaxation models for granular flows

چکیده
In this work we describe an efficient model for the simulation of a two-phase flow made of a gas and a granular solid. The starting point is the two-velocity two-pressure model of Baer-Nunziato [1]. The model is supplemented by a relaxation source term in order to take into account the pressure equilibrium between the two phases and the granular stress in the solid phase. We show that the relaxation process can be made thermodynamically coherent with an adequate choice of the granular stress. We then propose a numerical scheme based on a splitting approach. Each step of the time marching algorithm is made of two stages. In the first stage, the homogeneous convection equations are solved by a standard finite volume Rusanov scheme. In the second stage, the volume fraction is updated in order to take into account the equilibrium source term. The whole procedure is entropy dissipative. For simplified pressure laws (stiffened gas laws) we are able to prove that the approximated volume fraction stays within its natural bounds.

Comparison of the hyperbolic range of two-fluid models on two-phase gas -liquid flows
In this paper, a numerical study is conducted in order to compare hyperbolic range of equations of isotherm two-fluid model governing on two-phase flow inside of pipe using conservative Shock capturing method. Differential equations of the two-fluid model are presented in two forms (i.e. form I and form II). In forms I and II, pressure correction terms are hydrodynamic and hydrostatic, respecti...
متن کاملA Theory of Cooperative Diffusion in Dense Granular Flows
Dilute granular flows are routinely described by collisional kinetic theory, but dense flows require a fundamentally different approach, due to long-lasting, many-body contacts. In the case of silo drainage, many continuum models have been developed for the mean flow, but no realistic statistical theory is available. Here, we propose that particles undergo cooperative displacements in response ...
متن کاملModel Adaptation for Hyperbolic Systems with Relaxation
In numerous applications, a hierarchy of models is available to describe the phenomenon under consideration. We focus in this work on general hyperbolic systems with stiff relaxation source terms together with the corresponding hyperbolic equilibrium systems. The goal is to determine the regions of the computational domain where the relaxation model (so-called fine model) can be replaced by the...
متن کاملNonlocal rheology of granular flows across yield conditions.
The rheology of dense granular flows is studied numerically in a shear cell controlled at constant pressure and shear stress, confined between two granular shear flows. We show that a liquid state can be achieved even far below the yield stress, whose flow can be described with the same rheology as above the yield stress. A nonlocal constitutive relation is derived from dimensional analysis thr...
